Onboarding Buddy System

Welcome to the ServiceCorps Onboarding Buddy System. This system is designed to ensure a smooth transition for our Fellows into the ServiceCorps Fellowship. We are pairing each incoming Fellow with a Fellow from the current class in order to allow for incoming Fellows to:

  • Feel comfortable with the transition from college to ServiceCorps
  • Receive advice on excelling during ServiceCorps and nonprofit placements
  • Learn more about Buddy’s experiences during the program and how to prepare for the fellowship
  • Learn more about how to adjust to host cities when you are starting the fellowship; and ways to build a community
  • Understand how to find and secure apartment for the year
  • Advice on how to take an active role in shaping the future of ServiceCorps

Setting Expectations

Logistics: ServiceCorps plans to send a connecting introductory email between the Buddy matches. Each incoming Fellow is expected to take the initiative to follow up the email and reach out their respective Buddy directly via email. Each Buddy has been notified of their match and the current Fellows look forward to hearing from you. Buddy’s should be respectful of one another’s time and determine a schedule of communication that works well for both parties.

Incoming Fellows need to:

  • Respond to the introductory email by introducing yourself and setting up a time to connect

  • Be clear on what you hope to gain from the relationship

  • Be prepared with questions about placement, programming, housing etc.

  • Work with Buddy to establish a timeframe of communication

Current Fellows need to:

  • Respond to Buddy’s outreach

  • Work with their Buddy to establish a timeframe of communication

  • Be available to answer Buddy’s questions

  • Be honest, open, and authentic about program experience

Incoming Fellows:

  • Opportunity to hear and ask questions about your Buddy’s fellowship experience

  • Learn valuable advice for starting your career, making the most out of working in the nonprofit industry, and taking advantage of leadership opportunities both inside and outside the Fellowship

  • Understand the various resources available to you as a Fellow for networking, learning, engagement, and social opportunities

Current Fellows:

  • Opportunities to pay forward any wisdom and lessons learned to the next class of Fellows

  • Share your experiences with the newest members of the ServiceCorps community

  • Contribute to the orientation of the next ServiceCorps class and the wellbeing of the program
