Motivation

For as long as I can remember, I have had a passion for helping others who are in need. I know that I am blessed with many abilities and opportunities that many others may not have. However, in recent years, I feel as though I have not acknowledged this passion, which is why I want to be a ServiceCorps Fellow. Upon entering College, life has seemed to always get in the way and I have not prioritized serving the community as much as I should. The opportunity that ServiceCorps provides would be such a unique, fulfilling experience; it would be hard for me to imagine passing it by. I want to understand the dedication and passion of working for a non-profit, while developing the unique skills that come along with it. I feel that I should share what I’ve been given to empower others and leave the world a better place. I know that I cannot change the world, but if I can make a small impact in a powerful way, it will make a difference in the end.

Bio

Hello, my name is Laura Edmonson and I am from Austin, Texas. I’m currently attending Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. I will graduate in May with my Bachelors in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing. When I arrived at A&M my freshman year I was considered a general studies major and had no idea what I wanted to do. Along the way, my focus turned to business so I began completing the requirements to transfer into Mays Business School. This was one of my biggest accomplishments in college because of the competitive nature among applicants. I decided to pursue marketing because I enjoy being creative as well as working with others in a team setting. Marketing requires good interpersonal and communication skills which both come very naturally to me. This has been a great fit and I can’t wait to begin my career in the Marketing field!

One of the things that have truly shaped my college experience and my professional aspirations was my study abroad. The summer after my sophomore year I had the fortune of spending 6 weeks in Strasbourg, France studying International Finance and International Business. In addition to studying, I was able to visit various corporations and government institutions of the EU, further exposing me to the international business world. Not only did I get to have some of the most incredible experiences traveling around France and Europe, but I also found a passion for the international business world. I learned to appreciate the many differences among cultures around the world and how something truly powerful can come from people working together. I hope to continue to work on an international business level as well as continue to travel around the world!

While traveling is one of the things I am most passionate about, I spend the majority of my time with my friends and family. When I’m with them I love to try new restaurants and foods and spend as much of my time outside as possible. I have been running my whole life and am going to complete my first half marathon this April which I’m extremely excited about. I have also recently begun hiking at the many national and state parks around Texas, which is a great way to get to see new places and enjoy the outdoors! I hope to continue this hobby and explore new trails all around the country.

As I approach the end of my college career, I am thrilled to be able to participate in ServiceCorps and gain the invaluable experience I know it will offer. It has always been important to me to give back to the community whenever I can, and this was the perfect opportunity for me to do just that. I have been extremely blessed throughout my life and now am about to graduate from a great university, but I know that not everyone gets the same opportunities as I’ve had. I saw the impact that could be made not only on the community, but on me as well, through a year of working for a non-profit organization which is why I have decided to pursue this program. I am most excited about working alongside people who are just as passionate about service as I am, and to see the way they pour that into their work at the non-profit organization. I am immensely grateful to be working for Citigroup after my service year and I know that I will take the many things I learn this year with me for a lifetime.
