I have always been very lucky. I cannot think of a time that I went without food, shelter, or other basic staples. I have always had a loving family willing to both support and invest in me. I was grew up in a well connected world and was always able to ask for help when I needed it. As I have grown and learnt more about the world and a lot of the pain therein, I realized that to not try and help people to live as blessed a life as me is not only selfish but cowardly. I realize that the work involved at times is tough and demanding, and I want to challenge myself to be the best person I can, and at the same time make this world the best version that I can.
From a young age my family has instilled in both me and my siblings the idea that there are two types of people in the world; helpful humans and others. And they always encouraged us to try and be the former, even if doing so removed us from our comfort zone. This moral is one that I have always tried to let guide my life, and so when I came across and was accept by the Service Corps I realized the opportunity I had in front of me. Here was a chance to finally give back to a world that had always treated me kindly, by helping those who were not born as lucky as I. And, maybe selfishly, I am also able to better myself, to learn and struggle and grow. I hope to challenge myself in new ways everyday, and by doing so make the world a better place and grow my heart and mind.
